This is an important question for everyone involved in sports to wrestle with. Think of the implications: If sports were not in the garden and came about as a result of sin–then we should have nothing to do with them. They would be un-redeemable.
If sports were in the garden, then they were a part of God’s good creation. They would be something God delighted in. The fall then would have tainted sports just like everything else God would have a desire to redeem them.
So, were sports in the garden or did sports originate after the garden? What do you think? Would you answer the question differently if I said ‘competition’ as opposed to ‘sports’? What about ‘play’ as opposed to ‘sports’?
Good questions, right.
My goal today is to not give any answers or thoughts but rather to introduce the question. If you would like to read more, check out this post from Bob Schindler entitled: Was There Competition in the Garden?
