One of the great challenges to sports ministers today is a lack of knowledge and understanding about the field of sports ministry. Many people have no idea what it is or what it entails, while many others only have a partial understanding of it.
A group that knows surprisingly little about the field and yet has a key role to play in it, are pastors. I recently asked some of my fellow students in a seminary class about their understanding and experience with sports ministry. I was surprised to find that only a few knew about it or had previous experience of it.
Many current and future pastors don’t fully comprehend the scope of sports ministry or how it can function in their churches. The problem is that it inevitably leads to many missed opportunities for ministry.
My experience in the sports ministry field has allowed me to learn a great deal about sports ministry and see its impact first hand. I have seen it implemented locally and globally; I’ve seen it utilized in small and big churches; I’ve seen the application of it in a variety of sports; I’ve seen it ministering to non believers and believers. The list can go on, but the most important aspect of sports ministry that I’ve been a witness to, is changed lives. I’ve literally seen people’s lives changed by this type of ministry. That alone should make every pastor take notice and want to find out more about the field of sports ministry.
Our call at CSO is to help churches develop gospel centered sports ministries that will aid the church in accomplishing its mission. How can you get involved?
Pray for our work, come alongside us as we minister to churches, and talk with your local pastor about sports ministry.
