OK, here’s one story. Last summer, Matt, a young man I coached in church basketball 9 and 10 years ago called to make sure I knew that he had just graduated from Medical School. I was touched and proud. Matt had been a tall, rangy kid when I first had him as a high school junior. We worked on skills and his confidence all year, but he just wasn’t a great shooter or ball handler. In the playoffs his junior year, we were in overtime and our best player had fouled out. Matt was fouled with three seconds left in OT down two points. He made both free throws to extend the game. We talked about his clutch performance a good bit and he seemed to draw a lot from succeeding when others were depending on him. His senior year he really blossomed as a player and a young man. I knew he went on to UNC, and was interested in medicine, but getting into and finishing Med School is another thing. The sweet part is that when Matt called, I was in one of those middle-aged-man down periods myself, and it meant a lot to me.
