As I’ve written about previously, we are in the design process of our church’s expansion, which is a five piece project to be done all at the same time, with one of those pieces being a Sportsplex (gym and workout center). I’ve spent the previous couple of months planning and designing this facility and figuring out exactly what I would like it to look like and include. We have met with our architects and a conceptual footprint and basic design for the entire facility has been completed.
Unfortunately, this past Monday, our operations director told us that plans may be put on hold while they evaluate if our congregation is up for a 20+ million dollar capital campaign. There has been a ton of momentum forward on the part of the staff, but there is a sense that the congregation is not moving with us and may not be ready to make a large pledge in the fall of the year. As you can imagine, this came as a major blow to those of us in the room, myself included. Now, it may well still be determined in the next couple of weeks that we should move forward as planned, but it’s up in the air right now.
As I’ve been chewing on this so far this week, I’m reminded of Paul’s words in Philippians 4:12, “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.” My ambition and desire to have this facility become a reality have consumed my thoughts and actions for the past couple of months, but whether it happens or not, I need to lean on Paul’s words and learn to be content in all situations.
Can we be ambitious AND content in all situations? Maybe an interesting topic for discussion…
