I should start off by saying that I’m a huge fan of Tim Tebow. I certainly appreciate his bold Christian witness and admire his authenticity. Perhaps even more than that though, I root for him because he’s an underdog. He has been told he’s not smart enough nor an accurate enough of a thrower to play QB in the NFL. I also root for him because he’s unorthodox. He breaks the mold on what a prototypical Quarterback in the NFL should be. For all of these reasons he has captivated the nation. “Tebowmania” has become a phenomenon.
I am extremely disappointed though that he is no longer a Denver Bronco.
Sure, the Jets will use Tebow in goal line and short yardage situations. Perhaps they will even use him as a Tight End or Running Back. Whatever role they use him in, I’m sure he’ll give great effort and do well. What he won’t be though is the starting Quarterback. Mark Sanchez recently received a contract extension. They recently signed Drew Stanton from the Lions to be a backup. And they drafted Greg McElroy out of Alabama last year. Will Tebow actually get any reps in practice as a Quarterback outside of short yardage packages? Probably not. The fact is, the Jets have three Quarterbacks that they like and I don’t think Tebow will uproot any of them.
Even if Tebow were to get some regular reps at Quarterback and improve–I don’t think he will ever start for the Jets. In fact, I don’t think any team will ever give Tebow another shot as a starting Quarterback. I just don’t think any team is willing to take that risk. There’s just too many unknowns with Tebow.
Unfortunately, my prediction is that Tim Tebow will become the greatest “What if…” sports story. Who knows what Tebow could have done as a starting Quarterback with the Broncos. Could that offense actually succeed for a whole season? Would Tebow have ever developed into a polished passer? How much better of an offense would the Broncos be with one more legit receiver and a pass-catching Tight End? Could Tebow have altered his throwing mechanics?
We’ll never know.
