As I begin, let me ask you some important questions:
- How is your Sports Ministry going? If you only have a one word answer like, “Fine” or “OK” this might be just what you need.
- What are the reasons for your answer? Are they quantifiable? This question begins to gently sway the boat! Because at the heart of this question you are being asked if you have a solid framework in place to evaluate your ministry on a regular basis.
- Where do you want the Sports Ministry to be in three years? Think carefully about your answer and prayerfully consider what you think God wants for your ministry too! You might say “Dang, you really want me to think that deeply and even ask God what He wants? Are you going to have me share this with my leadership? Isn’t that setting me up for failure and more scrutiny? I am happy with where it is right now!”
Is the boat steadily rocking yet? Let’s keep going.
I am convinced that too many Sport Ministries within the local church have plateaued when they could be thriving. Unfortunately to add to this, many leaders are apathetic about this plateau! Why apathetic? You may have fallen into a routine, you have a ministry that you like, you designed it, it is a well run machine, your schedule is predictable, you are doing what you enjoy, your kids are in a good school, even the wife is happy. WHY ROCK THE BOAT?
The reason the boat needs to be rocked is that if your Sports Ministry is like the vast majority then some of the following may be true:
- very few coaches have been equipped to share the gospel or minister to families participating
- you have no idea what percentage of unbelievers are participating
- you do not have a follow up plan for new believers because there has not been a need for it
- your Sports Ministry is more about sports than ministry
If these statements are true, there is a missed opportunity for the Great Commission to be further fulfilled. You have the best outreach tool to touch unchurched families in the area and the “ministry” part of your sports ministry may be falling to the wayside.
Only those that value their calling more than their comfort would have read to this point. There is hope. The calling of CedeSports is to come alongside sports ministers, and ask the hard questions, prompt you, equip you, connect you to others doing the same thing in gospel preaching churches like yours!
