July, August, and September is a very busy time for many professional teams. If you keep up with sports, then you understand that there are certain windows for buying and selling players. The English Premier League transfer window closed on September 1st with a record breaking £870 million ($1.32 billion ) being spent. In the NFL, teams spent $1.321 billion in the first 72 hours of the free agency window.
Forbes released The World’s Highest-Paid Athletes list, and topping that list is Floyd Mayweather, worth $300 million! It’s mind blowing how man can put a price tag on a human being. Imagine the pressure that comes along with that price tag. Young 20 year old, Raheem Sterling, was purchased by EPL heavyweight Chelsea F.C. for a mind blowing £44 million ($67.1 million)! Many sports writers have questioned if the young man can withstand the pressures and demands of performing with such a price tag hanging over his head.
During this season’s player transfers, I found myself questioning my own worth. What value does man place on my life? Society seems to have a pretty strong influence on telling us our worth. As the presidential election is starting, different candidates are telling me how valuable my vote is to them. I receive multiple credit card offers weekly telling me how much I’m worth to them. My current job has a salary informing me on my worth. My three amazing boys even show me how much I’m worth when they spread their arms as far apart as possible and say, “I love you this much!” People spend many hours a day contemplating their worth and how valuable they are to society.
Jesus said, “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” Then how much are you and I worth? We are so valuable to God that he took on the flesh of man and came to earth as Christ Jesus with the sole intention of saving humanity. In John 6:47, Jesus says, “Anyone who believes has eternal life.” Each one of us are sinners! We turn our backs on God everyday! Yet God valued us, unworthy sinners that we are, so much so that Jesus would suffer one of the worst deaths imaginable to man by agonizing at length on a cross. This wasn’t the worst pain! The worst pain would come when he died, then took on the sins of those who believed, as God the Father turned his face from Christ.
Many days we may question our worth; we measure ourselves to the world’s standards. Instead, turn to the Word of God and be reminded of the value that God has placed on you! Know that there is nothing that can separate us from the Love of God. If you have never put your faith in God, then today is the day. Jesus told us that anyone can believe, so turn from the world and place your faith in Christ who died for all believers.
